What I bring to you first is a unique group of people who don't mind at all being called weird, strange, unusual or anything else along that line.....one thing you don't want to call them are spelunkers. They'll tell you very quickly that cavers rescue spelunkers.
These are cavers from the National Speleological Society, who recently held their convention here in little old Crawford County, Indiana. More than 1,400 from all over the world showed up for the week long event. Many of them set up camp at the 4-H fairgrounds here and held their seminars in the high school across the road.
I figured the best way to introduce you to some f these people would be to just let you see their faces. They came from all walks of life, from the smartest scientists on the planet to ordinary people like you and me, plumbers, truck drivers, ditch diggers, they just like to crawl underground to some of the most unique places in the world. Some came from England, Asia, Europe, New Zealand, South America as well as from coast to coast in the United States. They came here to this one little place in Southern Indiana to talk, learn, and crawl around in an area that is highly known for it's caves systems. Later I will let you meet in person four of these amazing individuals and read about some of the things they have done and are doing. Right now though I'm just going to let you see their faces. A face can tell a lot about a person, but at the same time you might be a little surprised about them to when you get to know them.
